Casa de Farol

The Casa del Farol (Lighthouse), or Casa Rosada (Pink House), is one of the best preserved huano houses in Chicxulub Pueblo. It is home of Doña María Dzulub since her marriage in the nineteen-seventies.

The house was originally built of mud; of red earth, with an earthen floor and had no windows. The husband of the owner replaced the walls for mampostería, added a floor and installed windows. The light in front of the house was for a long time the only light source around the area. Thus, it was a meeting point for the neighborhood.

Nowadays, the house is used as altars for crosses of Santa Cruz. A green cross was found in a cave in the countryside by the grandfather of Doña María’s husband. Considered a miracle, the cross was for many years part of the Fiesta de la Ermita, an important celebration to pray for health and good harvest: People used to celebrate the cross at Casa Rosada with charanga and mariachi music.
